‘Always looking to the future of the union’

Evan Lewis MBE BA, FUW General Secretary 1968-1989

ONE of the longest serving members of staff at the FUW has died, after a short illness at Aberystwyth. Mr Evan Lewis, (pictured right), held the post of General Secretary from 1968 to 1989, and never lost touch with the union.

“He was committed to the FUW even now, an extremely effective administrator, he had a modern head on his shoulders and I would learn something everytime I spoke with him,” said FUW President Glyn Roberts.

“He was always looking to the future of the union, passionate about farming and appreciative of all the hard work the union continues to do now, supporting the farmers of Wales as we go into the future,” said Mr Roberts.

Mr Lewis first joined the FUW as assistant general secretary in 1959, briefly moving to Cardiganshire County Council for four years before becoming the FUW General Secretary in 1968. Mr Lewis leaves a wife, Eirwen, and two daughters Branwen and Carys.

A full obituary will appear in the next issue of Y Tir.
