Brisk trade at Welshpool

CHAROLAIS bulls met a brisk trade at Welshpool on February 5, peaking at 6,800gns with 24 bulls selling to an average of £3,618.

The sale topper was Davally Ivanhoe TI +50 SRI +51 from D Thornley and A J Smith of Swadlingcote, Derbyshire, purchased for 6,800gns by G R Saunders, Bonvilson, South Glamorgan.

This 17-month-old Balthayock Longbow son is a full brother to both Davally Invincible – who topped Welshpool in November at 6,000gns – and the 12,000gns Wesley Equinox.

Next, selling for 5,500gns to M J and D G Owen, Powys, came the supreme champion – the 17-month-old Major son Graiggoch Iceman exhibited by G Jones of Llanrwst. Judge David Bothwell, of Co Fermanagh, said: “I selected him for his size and power.

“He is a structurally sound bull and demonstrates the Charolais traits of growth and good conformation.” From the same vendor was the first prize winner Graiggoch Impressive by Maerdy Grimaldi, who was purchased for 5,000gns by M Hughes and G T Jones of Machynlleth.

Trefaldwyn Invictus TI +55 SRI +47 sold for 4,600gns to J Jenkins of Haverfordwest.

This 18-month-old Blelack Digger son came from R A Owen, of Welshpool, who also sold the Goldies Eddy sired Trefaldwyn Icarus TI +40 SRI +36 for 4,000gns to B T R and R Gittins, Welshpool.

Three bulls were purchased for 4,200gns. Mortimers Farms, Eastleigh, Hampshire, offered the first, Mortimers Illiad TI +41 SRI +35.

This 22-month-old Mortimers Vanquish son went to J E Williams and Sons, Craven Arms, Shropshire.

Next was the 21-month-old Wilesa Ivan TI +48 SRI +47, by the 12,000gns Goldies Elation from W Owen and T Wilson, of Criccieth, to G L Williams, Brecon.

Finally B S Jones, Brecon, sold his class winner Bailea Ikeadotcom, a 21- month-old Elgin Fergal son to D N Cook, Lutterworth, Leicestershire. Charolais females sold to buyers as far afield as Northern Ireland and Cornwall.

The 18-month-old champion Midas Iris TI +37 SRI +43 led the trade at 5,000gns to T O’Neil of Claudy, Co Londonderry. Iris won the reserve female championship at the English National calf show for R H Coppinger of Wem, Shropshire.
