Farm safety survey launched

by Hefin Williams, IBERS, Aberystwyth University

ACCORDING to the United Kingdom Health and Safety Executive, almost one person per week has been killed as a direct result of agricultural work over the last ten years. Many more have sustained serious injury or illness by working on farms. We at Aberystwyth University are seeking members of the public (particularly those under 40 years old) who are working or volunteering on farms, either full time or part time, to undertake a short online survey. Our aim is to identify the factors that may increase the risk of safety incidences on UK farms so that we may identify recommendations for reducing the risk in the future. As a reward for the use of your time, we are offering all participants the opportunity to enter a prize draw. The confirmed prizes thus far include: • Free one year membership to the Farmers’ Union of Wales; sponsored by the FUW. • Free Dunlop Purofort Thermo Plus full safety boots in a size of your choice; donated by W D Lewis and Son, Lampeter. • Free First Aid Kit in compliance with British Standard 8599 donated by Aberystwyth University. You can participate in the project by going to: yfc‐safety.ibers.aber.ac.uk
