WELSH Liberal Democrats leader Kirsty Williams has urged the Welsh Government to sort out delays in Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) payments to farmers that are causing great distress. She has been contacted by volunteers for the Farming Community Network (formerly the Farm Crisis Network) who have seen a large number of farmers in significant distress as a result of the delays. BPS payments were due in early December yet many farmers in Brecon and Radnorshire are yet to receive them, said Mrs Williams after raising the issue in the National Assembly last month. “The Welsh Labour Government is causing huge distress to many farmers in Brecon and Radnorshire,” added the local AM. “Farmers have been calling, on the brink of suicide, due to the financial difficulties they face,” she said. “This is on top of the fact that, because of the mishandling of the changes to farming support by Welsh Government, farmers were already only to receive 80 per cent of their entitlement. “Like any business, farmers have bills to pay. They rely heavily on the December payments to pay those bills, so it has a knock on effect to the wider rural economy. “The Welsh Labour Government need to sort this mess out and they need to sort it out quickly.”
