A STRING of recent testimonial events for beef farmer and rugby legend John Davies from Boncath, Pembrokeshire, raised an outstanding £30,000 for charity. John, who played over 600 matches of first class rugby for Neath, Richmond and Llanelli/ Scarlets – and five seasons for Crymych RFC – gaining 34 Wales international caps, enjoyed a hugely successful testimonial in his home village of Crymych. One of the organising committee members was FUW facilities and general administration manager Peter Davies who said three events were organised on three successive evenings. The first event was a fashion show supported by 250 guests. The following night, a gala dinner attracted 450 supporters. Derek Bevan, referee at the 1991 Rugby World Cup final and the 1997 European cup final, and Rev Canon Dorrien Davies were the guest speakers. The MC being Eleri Sion of BBC Radio Wales. The final event was a celebrity rugby match when a Crymych XV played a John Davies Invitation XV featuring past British Lions and Wales internationals plus current international Scott Williams. Two hundred and fifty guests attended the pre-match lunch with a further 300 supporters turning up to watch the match. Cheques of £7,500 have been donated to Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, Wales Arthritis Care, Crymych First Responder and the John Hartson charity “Grab Life by the Balls”.
