Spring farm walks to help improve grassland

LIVESTOCK farmers can find out how to achieve top performance from grassland at two farm walks in Flintshire and Gloucestershire this month.

The “Forage Field – Milking Grass for Profit” Spring Farm Walks have become a mainstay of the calendar for grassland farmers and are always well attended by hundreds of producers.

This year the RABDF, DairyCo, BGS partnership visits farms that showcase how grassland can be a key driver of profitable milk production.

The first walk on April 23 is hosted by Ed Morgan at Carreg Y Llech Farm, Treuddyn, Mold.

Technical topics will include:

• Transition to autumn block calving;

• System management – led by Phil Clarke, P&L Agriconsulting;

• Reseeding – led by Helen Mathieu, Germinal GB;

• Soil analysis – back to basics.

The second event on April 28 is hosted by Keith Davis, Mile Bridge Dairy, Lydney Estate, Aylburton.

Technical topics will include:

• Business evolution;

• Obsessive grassland management;

• Breeding the right animal for the right system;

• Managing financial risk. Pre-registration is essential.
